Humbolt Squid Invade!
I read recently, and I'm sure others did too about a curious increase in the numbers of Giant Humboldt Squid along the west coast. Evidently they are also more widespread than in previous years. Curious.
Several of the articles I read were quick to climb on the "Global Warming" band wagon - in my opinion a convenient and thoroughly abused excuse. Some experts claim that there is a bubble of low-oxygenated water off the coast and that the squid seem to prefer this . They comment that the low levels of O2 in the water may be from , you guessed it, "global warming".
I guess it depends on which expert you choose to listen to whether or not the phenomenon really exists and whether or not we (as a species) are responsible for it.
I suppose one might even argue that President Bush is the cause for the increase in squid/O2 off the west coast. After all it was his singular decisions and actions that have lead to global warming, right? (Another convenient scapegoat!)
Just how far up/down the chain do you want to go to dump the blame? If blame there is to give.
IN MY OPINION - the ocean is a constantly changing and evolving ecosystem, like the planet itself, and like life itself changes and adapts to conditions. As someone much smarter than me once said "The only constant in life is change". The big difference is that now, for the first time in history we are able to measure and observe the changes so know that they exist and are so more aware.
I bet the local fishermen are enjoying the suddenly bountiful harvests of squid and thanking Neptune for their good fortune!
